No line in the sand

AS the Government’s minister for local transport, you’d expect North West Durham MP Richard Holden to be an ace up the sleeve for the region when it comes to pushing the case in Westminster for cash for much-needed public transport plans in the North East.

The reopening of the Leamside rail line – and subsequent hoped-for Tyne and Wear Metro extension – is seen by many among our region’s business community as vital to attracting new investment and getting companies to locate here.

But when asked whether he would commit to the project, Mr Holden’s reaction was lukewarm to say the least.

It seems concern over finding the estimated £745m needed to fund it remains a sticking point for Mr Holden.

While some North East MPs would, were they in his position, no doubt draw a line in the sand over this issue, it would appear not so for Mr Holden.
